Kenyan Holidays
New flights to Kenya announced
Virgin Atlantic has announced that it is to begin operating flights between London and Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, a move which may make Kenyan holidays more accessible to many Britons.
The city will be the fourth African destination served by the airline, which already runs
flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa, as well as Lagos in Nigeria.
Sir Richard Branson, the founder and chairman of the airline, told reporters in Nairobi on Monday that it was hoped that Virgin would carry 100,000 passengers from the UK to Kenya per year after the route launches on July 1st.
The flights from London Heathrow will operate once a day, although if there is strong demand, the airline has said that two flights could be introduced.
Speaking of the proposed route in December, Sir Richard said that around 500,000 people a year fly to Nairobi to enjoy Kenyan safaris and the beautiful scenery.
He added: "It is also the leading hub for east Africa providing a gateway for the whole of east Africa and the Indian Ocean and Nairobi is an important city in its own right with many international institutions based there."
Kenyan holidays 'are environmentally-friendly'
People who are looking to take eco-friendly African holidays may be interested in reading that Kenya has received praise for its conservation efforts.
An international tour operator and environmental groups have said that Kenyan holidays make good environmental impacts, allAfrica.com reports.
Dr Michael Iwand, head of group corporate environmental management of tour company TUI in Germany, told an audience at the Haller Park in Mombasa that many tourists are now choosing their holiday destinations based on green issues.
"The competition for the source markets is very stiff worldwide and countries like Kenya can only redeem themselves and get a share of the business through vigorous campaigns on the environment," he said, according to the news provider.
Kenya has to compete with nations which receive subsidies from their governments to develop their tourism markets, he added.
Mr Iwand said that Kenyan safaris bring thousands of tourists to the country each year. Some 45,000 come for Kenyan holidays through TUI's agent, Pollman's Tours and Safaris, he remarked.
People on Kenyan holidays who choose to take safaris may do so to relax, see wildlife, challenge themselves, explore an interest or reconnect with nature, according to the country's tourism website.
